"The current crisis provides the clearest evidence that some Catholic bishops are behaving in a high-handed way towards congregations to a degree unthinkable in most other churches in England. The result is both crushing and alienating to congregations and communities. The closing of a church does not solve the problem, as disposal can still be contentious and time-consuming. Faced with declining numbers of priests, English dioceses should look to an empowered laity, who up and down the country, are showing passionate concern for many much-loved churches."
